Defend yourself with Krav Maga
Have you ever wanted to learn how to defend yourself? Consider trying Krav Maga – one of the most efficient and deadly ways of self-defense.
Krav Maga is a martial art used for self-defense that draws on techniques from Boxing, Karate, Wrestling, Judo, and Aikido. It was developed for and is used by the Israeli army, and is known for its efficiency in defending yourself from attacks. So in other words, it’s basically learning how to become a bad-ass ninja.
Krav Maga is based around defensive moves and avoiding confrontation. The aim is to make the fight quick and aggressive to escape as quickly as possible. The attacks they teach you are aimed at vulnerable parts of the body, like the neck, face, groin, and eyes, which can cause the other person serious injury.
Developing physical aggression is a core concept, and unlike emotional aggression, it means staying focused and aware of your surroundings while using whatever means to incapacitate your opponent.
There are a handful of places in Shanghai teaching Krav Maga. Body Spirit Training is one of these, and their beginners class teaches you the core moves and basic techniques. Joe Chen was leading the class, and took us through a warm-up of light cardio, stretching, and some strength exercises.
After we were warmed up we practiced some techniques of basic strikes and ground work. Working with partners, we practiced proper punches and kicks, and how to escape a grip. Learning how to escape a grip was a bit anxiety inducing, but equally empowering learning what to do if ever in that situation.
The technique was easy enough to learn, and Joe calmly explained to the class what to do. He paid a lot of attention to detail and would correct us if we needed to adjust something.
Like other martial arts, Krav Maga has a belt system that indicates your skill level from white to black. Body and Mind Training studio has classes that follow a plan to take you from a beginner to a serious fighter. It’s not, however, for the faint of heart – it will definitely challenge you physically and mentally.
I walked out of the class feeling more confident that I’d be able to escape an attack. If you’re into fitness or martial arts and want to learn how to defend yourself, this is definitely a good way to learn some serious skills. Add Body Spirit Training or Joe on WeChat to get started.
